Health And Safety

Safety & Health

The Kinetics Group has introduced a strategy called “Target Zero”, the purpose of which is to develop a working environment where there are no accidents. The initiative aims to target all employees via the issue of a new safety pocketbook and a structured 2 year training and awareness program with the goal of changing the culture and the attitude towards health and safety, as HSE statistics show that the vast majority of accidents are caused by unsafe acts rather than unsafe conditions.

Through the implementation of integrated policies and procedures the Group is looking to constantly change attitudes and beliefs which in turn will increase Health and Safety during on the job actions helping to continually reduce accidents and achieve the Group Objective of Target Zero.

Accident frequency rate

Significant progress has been achieved in reducing Accident Frequency Rates (AFR) across the Group and despite continuing increases in employee numbers since 2006.

The AFR for wholly owned businesses continues to improve to 0.51 for 2008/09 from 0.65 in 2006/07 and 0.55 in 2007/08. This performance is well ahead of the HSE’s UK Revitalising Health and Safety targets of 5% year on year.

Safety management audit

All divisions within the Group are now operating a Health and Safety Management system in line with the internationally recognised safety management standard OHSAS 18001.

Benchmarking

An independent benchmarking exercise carried out for Kinetics Group Accident Statistics against similar companies within the industry showed the Kinetics Group to be below the Construction Industry Average for Major Reportable Injuries with an Major Reportable Incidence Rate of 166 (per 100 000 employees) compared to the industry figure of 295.

Awards

The Group’s current health and safety performance has been recognised externally by attaining two national awards and one international award for Occupational Health and Safety Performance from RoSPA and the British Safety Council respectively.
